Evangelicals a Liberal Can Love
I just read a very insightful New York Times article that looks at evangelicals in an entirely new light.
The article touches on some of the deep prejudices that exist towards people of faith … most of which are completely understandable, given some of the ridiculous stances and statements the church and its spokesmen have made in the last century. It also exposes some of the unique and surprising things that are being done in the name of Christ.
Scorning people for their faith is intrinsically repugnant, and in this case it also betrays a profound misunderstanding of how far evangelicals have moved over the last decade. Today, conservative Christian churches do superb work on poverty, AIDS, sex trafficking, climate change, prison abuses, malaria and genocide in Darfur.
If you have a minute, it’s worth a read!

Interesting article.
IMO The author still practices some of the anti-Christian bigotry that he is in same article decrying. (Calling a well known evangelical, who is hip to hate, a ‘plague on the country’. REALLY? I’m not saying I’m a fan of P.R, but “A plague”!?)
I think this journalist is just coming to some realizations - that what the liberally biased media likes to demonize about evangelicals - is not necessarily true.
Common, ordinary, humble Christ followers are doing more every day for the ‘unloved and underprivileged’ around the world (and in our own country) than any card-carrying, so-called ‘bleeding heart’ liberal from Berkley or anywhere else. You just don’t hear about it, nor will you so long as your info comes from mainstream media or liberally leaning blogs.
Interesting anecdote at the end of the article - can a ‘Catholic nun’ be considered an ‘Evangelical’? I believe Mr. Kristof is either sorely misinformed still, OR he’s showing some of his existing bias - using the ‘curse’ word “Evangelical” to describe, in a broad brush stroke, anyone in the ‘Christian faith.’
Having said that, I’m glad Mr. Kristof’s world view is growing…

Just saying “2,000 lbs” might be a bit of an exaggeration…
Preachers are infamous for their ability to ’round-up’.
