19 :: Listen To Our Hearts
How do you explain, how do you describe
A love that goes from east to west
And runs as deep as it is wide
You know all our hopes, Lord, You know all our fears
And words cannot express the love we feel
But we long for You to hearSo listen to our hearts, hear our spirits sing
A song of praise that flows from those You have redeemed
We will use the words we know
To tell You what an awesome God You are
But words are not enough to tell You of our love
So listen to our heartsIf words could fall like rain from these lips of mine
And if I had a thousand years
Lord, I would still run out of time
If you listen to my heart, every beat will say
“Thank You for the life, thank You for the truth
Thank You for the way.”So listen to our hearts, hear our spirits sing
A song of praise that flows from those You have redeemed
We will use the words we know
To tell You what an awesome God You are
But words are not enough to tell You of our love
So listen to our hearts

Man! I got tuned in to Geoff Moore when I went to Icthus ‘97 where I’d never heard a single song from the guy, but his performance cranked it out of the ballpark. I rushed out and bought his greatest hits CDs and Threads. Then I went to a Steven Curtis Chapman concert where he fronted, and he acted a bit like SCC’s less talented little brother and I was put off for awhile. But thanks to your post, I’ve broken out the MP3s again!

I think SCC actually co-wrote this song with Geoff (or Gandalf, as I like to call him) … they worked a lot together in the early days. In fact, I’m pretty sure that Michael W. Smith was the yet-undiscovered piano player on Geoff’s first album.
Regardless, what a beautiful chorus. We sang it at church on Sunday and it drew something out of me, something resonant. The further I get along this crazy journey, the less adequate my words seem to become … and the more my heart swells. It has to … and I have to trust that He’s laughing at my mindless drivel and listening instead to my spirit.
In a way, I think this totally reflects some of my recent frustrations with the church’s inadequacies. Perhaps I need to chill out, to listen a little less to the church’s “words” and listen a lot more to its “heart” …

I absolutely love how Paul puts it in Romans 8:26 - that the spirit intercedes for us “with groanings that cannot be uttered”. How awesome is that?! I’m often left feeling like I have something to say to God with nothing adequate to say it with, and He knows His creation so well that He provided an interpreter. We talk about how Christ bridged the sin gap between us and God, but daily the Holy Spirit is bridging the communication gap as we walk in communion with Him.
Back to the lyrics conversation - I’ve been really digging the Newsboys song “Landslide of Love” from their Devotion album.
Peace.
