Classroom Threats

I’ve found that fake and exaggerrated threats are a great way of managing behavior in my classroom. Anyone can send a kid into the hallway or give out a discpline referral form … but isn’t it simply more entertaining to say, “I’m going to tie you to the flagpole and give vegetables to the moms in carpool to throw at you!” Or how about, “I’m going to rip your arm off and beat you over the head with it!” (as my high school band director used to say)?

We all get a good laugh from the absurdity of the situation, and the student gets some relatively benign feedback telling him that his behavior is unacceptable. As long as we all know it’s a joke, we’re ok.

Right, Mrs. Robertson?

I’m tempted to do that with my own children … in fact …

I like to threaten kids with a lifetime of time outs. that works sometimes. and today i tried the guilt tactic. I told a 6 year old that if he let water from the drinking fountain get on the wall it would make the building fall down. he ran over to the wall and gave it a hug and said “I’ll save you from falling!” Of course 20 minutes later when I sent him to time out he screamed, “I hope water gets on the wall and the building falls down! Then I’ll laugh!’ So I guess threats only work part of the time. Also, I’m really excited about an AmeriCorps opportunity in SE Washington, and that of course would be AFTER, my brief stint in lovely SW Ohio!

    I didn’t know where to post this…

To my brothers and sisters in Christ…If there was a time a sister needed her church to surround her in prayer, this is the time. Many of you may not even know me, but I am asking you to join with me in lifting nine families up to God.

My name is Katherine Baker, I am a student at Taylor University. On last Wed. evening a semi plunged into a van of 5 students and 4 Taylor staff. 4 students and 1 staff are now in the presence of our King. The others are in the hospital, two of which are in critical condition.

One of the students that died was my good friend Laurel. There is so much pain and hurt and confusion on this campus. As a Resident Assistant (RA) the task ahead of me in the remainder 3 weeks of school are hard. I am in the grieving process yet many of my friends and ladies on my floor are too. I need strength, comfort, and a peace that transcends all understanding.

Most of all though I plead that you will pray for the five families that lost their lovede one. And the four others in bad condition. Also please lift up the driver of the semi (27 year old Richard), he is i nthe hospital, but in fair condition. I hurt for this man.

Thank you in advance for your support. God is in control of this evil world. I praise HIM for who He is.

He gives and takes away…Still (help) my heart to choose to say, Lord blessed be your name.
