I just received this in an email from my Field Director:

If you lose your passport, one of the required documents you need to give to the police (there’s a bunch of stuff) is a copy of a newspaper that ran an article or blurb about you losing your passport.

I guess the police feel you need to let as many people in your city/town/village know that your documents are missing so that “the people” can help you look for it. What’s the best way to do this? If you ask a police officer, they’ll say, “Go to the newspaper and have them run a blurb that has your full name, passport number, and residence permit number.”

I asked repeatedly in English and Chinese if this was truly necessary, and the five police officers that were getting paid to sit around and stare at me insisted that it must be done. So much for privacy in this country … please please please don’t lose your passport.

(Don’t worry, I’m not going to get arrested for telling you this — it’s common knowledge now.)

Lance, You give me opportunities, one after the other to trust in God for your safety and well-being while so far away from family. I refuse to go to the emotion of WORRY but rather FAITH . I love you. Be safe and careful. LOVE. MOM

a paper in the us would never run a blurb (unless you paid for it)

I’ve received a couple of concerned emails, so let me clarify … no, I didn’t lose my Passport, it was just a precautionary email by our amazing and ever-on-top-of-things field director.

Though I still don’t have my Residency Permit, so I’ve technically been living in China illegally for over 5 weeks now! Shhh … don’t tell …
