Chipped

I just broke a recently-installed dental crown while eating some Pringles. After two years worth of dental insurance on that one tooth, I might have to visit a Chinese dentist?

Yikes …

Hey Lance! I was just updating myself on what you are doing in China. I am pleased to say that yes I spent 3 weeks of my life in Yangshou, I believe the Guangxi province. I stayed on a street called West street… it’s called that because they think it’s pretty “westernized” but it still felt like China to me :)

I read that you had moon cakes. Definetly not one of my favorite treats. Sticky rice in a lotus leaf was next on my not so good list. All of my friends tried the dog that is served in China. They were not impressed.

Hopefully you’ll get to do fun stuff like riding on a bamboo boat through the mountains!

Yeah, they were the new “Crunchy Gravel” variety.

Thanks for the tidings, Renee … you were right next door to me and your cousin Steve, in the province directly south of where we live. It would have been about a 10 hour train ride to visit. I’m glad you were able to come!

You might want to head for Changsha for that dental work (or go further, someplace like beijing maybe?)

Dental work is not china’s ‘forte’. If you don’t believe me, check out the teeth on any one of your over 30 year old friends!

Seriously, the biggest concern with dental work in China is the lack of sterilization in dental clinics. That’s why you want to go to the biiggest, most modern, most likely to sterilize their equiment, dental clinic you can find. (You are trying to avoid getting Hepatitus.)

I do my dental work in Hong Kong - but I’m a BIG baby when it comes to my teeth. I like novicane!

I emailed some photos of my tooth to my dentist in Cincinnati and just received this reply:

    Hi Lance.

Nice to hear from you, and sorry for the alarm. I can assure you that your tooth will be fine, and you should not need to see a local dentist. The excellent picture you sent shows a typical porcelain fracture in a non-crical area. It will not affect the underlying tooth at all, as the tooth is still completely sealed by a cast metal coping (which is the dark color in the picture). The white porcelain is just there for looks, and as long as the edge is not cutting your tongue, and you are able to keep the area free from food impaction, there is no danger at all.

When you are back home, we can evaluate it and either smooth it off, or replace the crown. This type of fracture sometimes occurs after the root canal opening is done through the porcelain, and weakens it somewhat. I would not give it a second thought until you are home.

    Hope that helps!

How sweet is that? Praise the Lord!

What great news! Yeah for photos, dentists, and e-mail. I am glad you won’t have to travel far and wide to get that fixed … but really, avoid Pringles until your are back in America.
