Google is Blocked in China

As of today, China has blocked not only Google News and Blogspot (which have never been accessible to me), but also the entire Google domain. Yahoo, Excite, Altavista, and MSN are also blocked, along with Wikipedia, MySpace profiles, and several friends’ blogs.

I wonder where they’re going with this? Does it have something to do with the large delegation from the U.S. government that’s currently in the country?

I know for a fact that Google News, Blogspot, Wikipedia, MySpace profiles, and several other key websites are blocked in this entire region of Hunan.

It’s true, though … my IP address could be singled out as being “offensive” for something I’ve searched for lately or something like that. But I’d be surprised (and impressed?) if this automatically disabled every major English search engine for at my IP address. Yikes.

Any other people experiencing difficulty “behind the silk curtain”?

Google search of “google china” shows nothing being reported.

Maybe you ought to report to the local techies at your ISP that their system is experiencing problems, and suggest that they upgrade to good “made in USA” equipment in order to provide the best possible service to their customers. You know, a little psychology, not quite a punch in the face …

Looks like it was a personal thing … all of the search engines (but not the other sites) are back up and running for me. I’m sure that my ISP has nothing to do with it … it’s much bigger than that, Willy.

China, you go ahead and do your little powerplay … but I hope you notice that the effect it’s having on your people is exactly opposite of what you are trying for. Give it another year and the bubble’s going to burst!

How annoying for you. There’s a lot on the web at the moment about it. It will be interesting to see how long people’s outrage lasts.

    Cheers,

Definitely just in your region. I was suprised recently by the release of Blogspot from the nanny firewall. Google is no problem… yahoo is no problem. Technorati is a problem…BBC is always a problem…Wiki is a problem…Vox is a problem.

Try using a proxy…you’ll have to try lots and lots of them, cuz the nanny knows most of them too…especially if they are easy for you to find.
