Archive for the 'Headers' Category

To keep things interesting, I try to update the header at the top of webeldotnet. Here’s an archive of past headers.

It’s not love, but lack of love, which is blind.

Glenway Wescott was right when he wrote this … love opens eyes!

Some are guilty, all are responsible.

June 26th, 2008

webeldotnet: Some are guilty, all are responsible.

“In regard to cruelties committed in the name of a free society, some are guilty, while all are responsible.”

Abraham Joshua Heschel

I totally agree. While there are always culprits and criminals, advantaged and elite, antagonists and oppressors … I am, in the end, responsible for the actions that are taken in my society. I cannot completely disavow all knowledge, claim that I have no connection, or feign helplessness … I must step up and take action.

For I am responsible.

23 :: If you fear a crooked shadow, stand straight.

May 23rd, 2008

webeldotnet:If you fear a crooked shadow, stand straight.

I used to live tentatively, gingerly tiptoeing around other people in conversations and choices. I’d apologize profusely whenever I felt that I might be inconveniencing them … then apologize again for apologizing. It really was ridiculous … in my efforts to be kind and upright, I just lost my spine and often ended up inadvertently offending people.

Now I think I’ve swung to the other end of the spectrum … I try to say “yes” and “no” definitively, to be confident in my opinions, and to walk forward with conviction and assurance. Rather than always fear what other people might think or worry about how my reputation might be affected, I now try to trust my gut and stand for Truth. Sure, it might make me seem like a harsher person on the surface … but I think I’m ok with that.

And I hope that my shadow, in the process, is following suit.

Have a cool yule!

December 18th, 2007

webeldotnet: Have a cool yule!

This photo was taken last Christmas Eve day in Yueyang, where I spent the holiday with my cousins and a bunch of other volunteer teachers. Though this year’s Christmas might be a little less exotic, I’m still thrilled to spend it with my immediate family.

Bring on the snow, baby!

History is a set of lies agreed upon.

December 5th, 2007

webeldotnet: History is a set of lies agreed upon.

This jaded Napoleon Bonaparte quotation is probably more accurately stated, “History is a set of stories agreed upon.”

Probably.

Still, it touches on a salient idea … that what we know of the past is largely determined by what someone before us wanted us to know. For better or for worse, we see our world through a tinted lens.
