Not Refreshing At All

August 15th, 2007

By the way, I am very aware of the problems that this website is currently experiencing. I have no idea what is wrong, but now that I’m finally in a stable location with consistent Internet access, I’m hoping to get some help from the staff at my host to fix whatever’s gone awry.

Thanks for your patience if you’ve been constantly hitting “refresh” for the last month or so!

Whoops!

August 10th, 2007

I didn’t realize just how many of you have been silently following this blog. I’ve run into literally dozens of people since returning to the states who have commented about things they’ve read or seen here … and in a sense, it’s quite embarrassing. Sure, I know what happens when you publish something on the web … but I’m starting to wish that I had been more careful, consistent, and comprehensive this past year. I sure complained a lot, and I’m afraid that I wasn’t always very respectful of my audience.

As they say in television, I guess, “This is blogging!”

Restored

July 11th, 2007

Everyone seems to say that upgrading WordPress (the software behind this website) is easy and painless. It wasn’t for me. In fact, I completely screwed everything up in my attempt to get to WP2.2.

Luckily, I was able to restore everything to its previous glory from a saved backup. Whew. I’m going to try again tomorrow … hopefully I can get this all tidied up before leaving the Middle Country (that’s China)!

wdn Problems

July 6th, 2007

It has come to my attention that something is wrong with this website. Recently, I often have had to reload a page several times to get it to display properly, and several people have emailed me saying that it doesn’t come up at all for them. Is it working ok for you?

I also got a message from Doteasy, my web host, saying that a script on my website is misbehaving. If you can make any sense of this, I’d appreciate your help … it appears that I may have to upgrade my version of WordPress, but I’m hesitant to do that (and honestly don’t have the time to do it properly right now). Help!

I’m Powerless

June 4th, 2007

There’s a problem with my MacBook’s power cord, so I can’t really charge the battery right now. And as a result, I can’t get online, do my grad school work, edit my photos, or even watch DVD’s. Sorry, but you’ll have to entertain yourself elsewhere.

There is, however, some good news. Because of the gaokao (the massive test for Senior Three students), my school is closed this Wednesday through Friday. I’m planning to go to Hong Kong … and hopefully I can get the power cord replaced while I’m there!

Fiasco

April 27th, 2007

After cleaning the house and packing my bags today, I headed out the door at 6pm to catch the last bus to Changsha. My moto taxi, however, took a terrible route through some back streets, causing me to miss the bus. So I moved on to the train station, where I discovered that the two trains that usually leave between seven and eight were mysteriously not listed. Unfazed, I walked outside to try and find a mini-bus … if you bargain hard, you can usually get a fairly fast (and bumpy) ride on one of those.

That’s when I realized that I had left my airplane ticket in my apartment. Yeah.

So I went back home, had a good dinner of Mac and Cheese, re-packed my bags, and relaxed for a few hours. And here I sit. My plane leaves from Changsha at 10:40 in the morning, so I’m going to catch the 3am train to Changsha (it’s a slow one), arriving bright and early with plenty of time to get to the airport. Looks like I’ll be hitting Beijing with some weary eyes!

FYI, I really can’t afford a babysitter, so I’m leaving webeldotnet in charge of itself while I’m gone. It’ll be making automatic daily posts … I hope it behaves itself!

Quote of the Day

March 28th, 2007

“How do I feel about syndication? A long time ago Jeffrey Zeldman said something to this effect:

Q: If you offered an RSS feed, I could read your stuff without visiting your site.
A: If you stored your groceries on the sidewalk, we could eat your food without sitting across the table from you.

I’m not going to force you to, but come sit at my table and we can have jolly good time.”

Matthew Mullenweg

I agree wholeheartedly. Although I offer RSS feeds on my posts, comments, and photos, I really like it when my visitors actually come to see me. Welcome!
