I Wanna Be Evergreen
February 22nd, 2008Hey. My name’s Lance. You come here often?
- In the past few weeks, I’ve been blessed to stumble upon quite a few new friends here in the ‘Nati. It’s been fun, slowly and cautiously sticking my foot in the door while trying to maintain the delicate balance of time and margin that my sanity desires. Through the process, my heart has been pricked more than once … and I’m already thankful for what I think might develop out of this subtle new spreading-of-the-proverbial-wings. Good stuff, it is.
- I’m sending my stock 18-70mm lens, which was damaged in China, back to Nikon for repair tomorrow. I shouldn’t have waited this long, because in a day and a half I’m traveling yet again to a beautiful country where beautiful things are bound to happen. To compensate, I stopped at a photography store on the way home today and purchased a nice little 18-200mm lens … I was hoping not to drop so many bones, but if it works out, it would actually replace both of my current lenses, a total high-five when it comes to traveling. We’ll put it through its paces next week … in a small way, I’m a little excited to get back behind the lens again!
- “Indeed” seems to be my latest word. I guess that means that the people around me have been saying a lot of smart things lately.
- Nothing new is really happening on the house/lancelord scene … I replaced a doorknob this week and have been keeping ahead of the shoveling needs, and the bills all seem to be getting paid on time. In a way, the winter is nice … it’s a great excuse to put off things like shingle repair and wall painting.
- I think that being able to “read people” is sometimes a curse.
- At school, my classes have been going fairly well, but getting behind. Two and a half snow days so far, and
it’s looking like tomorrow could potentially be yet anothertomorrow is yet another! But I don’t mind … we can roll with it, and I’ve been thankful to be able to have a few lazy mornings lately. Teaching (and its related activity) can really be draining, especially in the winter time! - Soon enough, track season will be starting … and I’m getting excited. I designed some new uniforms today, and the schedule seems to be coming together as well. It’s gonna be great to get out there again … both for the kids and for my health. It’s been too long!
Well, that’s enough for now. I hope you guys have a great week … I’m off to Mexico to chill with some of my kiddos and watch God move on their hearts. I’ll see you on the flip-side!

February 16th, 2008BODIES: The Extortion
February 15th, 2008Many people in Cincinnati have been talking about a new exhibit at the Cincinnati Museum Center called Bodies: The Exhibition. In it, twenty two meticulously dissected human bodies are displayed for for world to see … a fascinating concept that I wouldn’t mind seeing.
But there’s a big problem … the owners of the exhibit refuse to reveal the origin of the bodies. We know that they’re Chinese, but aren’t sure if these people were executed criminals or poor countryside folks whose families were bought out. Personally, I’m not sure what they’re trying to hide … but I have seen how people’s lives can so easily be trampled upon by the rich and powerful over there. And I’m not wiling to give $23 to that.
“We ask for your continued support in our grassroots effort against this exhibit, and to inform people of the other side of the story that the Museum Center is not presenting to the public. Please check out our central information site for more information on how you can help. It is essential that the Asian community speaks in a strong voice and that we show the opposition from the many voices within our Asian community.”
– Janice Tsai Jezek
Friday night at 10pm on 20/20, ABC will be airing an investigative report that looks into the questionable sourcing of the bodies. If you’re in Cincinnati or if you care about the interests of the Asian community, you should check it out.

February 7th, 2008I have a fantastic idea for a video remix that would be a huge Internet sensation. Unfortunately, however, I haven’t the time nor desire to actually do it. Anyone?
If you turn the volume down really low on the second video then start both at the same time, it almost works. Well, not really … but doing that’s a lot easier than editing a video is!

Evangelicals a Liberal Can Love
February 5th, 2008I just read a very insightful New York Times article that looks at evangelicals in an entirely new light.
The article touches on some of the deep prejudices that exist towards people of faith … most of which are completely understandable, given some of the ridiculous stances and statements the church and its spokesmen have made in the last century. It also exposes some of the unique and surprising things that are being done in the name of Christ.
Scorning people for their faith is intrinsically repugnant, and in this case it also betrays a profound misunderstanding of how far evangelicals have moved over the last decade. Today, conservative Christian churches do superb work on poverty, AIDS, sex trafficking, climate change, prison abuses, malaria and genocide in Darfur.
If you have a minute, it’s worth a read!

Bachelor Tip #5
February 2nd, 2008Learn to cut your own hair.
I’ve been doing it for eleven years now (except for last year), and I figure that at fifteen bucks a pop, I’ve saved about $2000. Sure, it takes a little bit of practice to figure out how to handle the scissors/clippers/mirror, but it’s well worth the effort. And it’s fun too!
