When I was a young kid, maybe 10 or 12 years old, my brother HP had a car with a magic pedal in it. It was amazing, really … whenever we were sitting at a traffic light, he could hit this pedal and the light would instantly turn from red to green! He could seriously control traffic signals from inside the car … so cool, and quite convenient when we were in a rush!

It wasn’t until years later that I realized the truth … that he was simply watching the intersecting street’s traffic light and pressing the clutch just in time for the light change. It’s too bad, really … cause I could really use one of those.

An injured, bleeding deer that wandered into the rear of a Rossford pet store Saturday was treated by a veterinary team there, then ran free into a rural area, police reported.

The deer was discovered at about 1:20 p.m. bleeding on the floor of PetSmart, 27161 Crossroads Pkwy. Rossford police Officer Mark Skala, who responded to the call, assumed the animal would have to be put down. Instead, the store’s veterinary team stitched up the deer’s injured leg and administered antibiotics.

The deer remained calm while it was being treated, then got to its feet and fled, Officer Skala said.

I’m tired of hearing people complain about the outrageous salaries of professional athletes, actors, and musicians then seeing those same people pay $8 to see a film, $15 for an album, $20 for a dvd, $30 for a concert, or $50 for a ticket to the game.

Man, I love it when technology is used well.

During my first year of teaching, we didn’t really recite the Pledge of Allegiance … then 9/11 happened and it quickly became part of our daily morning ritual. Now, seven years later, I often find myself on the other end of the microphone, reading morning announcements and asking our entire school to repeat the pledge with me. And, to be honest, the longer I work in American schools, the more uncomfortable I become with it.

The mere fact that 385 kids are mindlessly parroting those words, with little to no understanding of what they’re actually saying, is quite disturbing to me. The format reminds me of China, where students of all ages are required to do daily morning exercises and spend weeks of their childhood in compulsory military training. It’s mindless, robotic, and completely against the American spirit (in my humble opinion).

Even more disturbing, however, is some of the content of the pledge. What’s so huge about the flag itself? What does “republic” mean? And isn’t our divisibility, the fact that we can disagree and separate ourselves, one of the very foundations of the freedoms that make us uniquely America?

I don’t get it.
