The Matriarch
My last living grandparent, my father's mother, left her earthly body a week ago to be with Jesus. An amazing woman, she is the embodiment of a generation almost forgotten. I can scarcely begin to tell my sentiments here, so instead i'll print what they read at her funeral. I'll also link to this obituary, complete with a guestbook for those of you who know my grandmother.
Katharina (Schleicher) Webel went to her heavenly home on Friday, July 5, 2002, at the age of 90. She died at Corona Regional Medical Center in Corona, California.
Katharina was born in Ruma, Yugoslavia on October 15, 1911 to Mathais and Christine Schleicher. She was to 2nd of 8 children, all of whom preceded her in death. She grew up in Beschka, then worked in Novisad until she maried Jakob Webel in 1933. They lived in Vinkovci and Marinci.
In 1944, the S.S. soldiers took them by force to Germany, thus they became refugees (displaces persons). They still lived in Germany when World War II ended, but soon tried to return to Yugoslavia. Instead, settled in Austria and lived their until March 1951. Jakob's sister, Elizabeth Keiper, sponsored the family so they could come to live in Medina, Ohio. In 1958, all became citizens of this great country, the United States of America.
The family moved to Akron, Ohio in 1964. Jakob retired from Ford Motor Company in 1973 and they again moved - this time to Mansfield. She was preceded in death by her husband Jakob Webel in 1989, daughters Hildegard as an infant in 1943 and Rosakia Whiting Wilde of Detroit Lakes, Minnesota in 2001.
Katharina enjoyed gardening, her flowers, making quilts, afghans and crocheting. But most of all, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were her pride and joy. Since her husband's death in 1989 she lived with her daughters, Elsa, Christie and Kay,
She is survived by seven sons and daughters-in-law; Reinhardt and Arlene Webel of Akron, Ohio; Karl and Grace Webel of Mechanicsburg, Virginia; Adolf and Linda Webel of Akron, Ohio (my parents); Rev. Robert and Marcia Webel of St. Petersburg, Florida; Dr. Jacob and Mary Webel of Grand Junction, Colorado; Daniel and Nancy-Jean Webel of Milford, Ohio; Dr Richard and Connie Webel of Columbia, Missouri; four daughters and sons-in-law: Elisabeth and Albert Yovichin of Canal Fulton, Ohio; Theresa and Charles Pavkov of Mansfield, Ohio; Katherina and Larry Zimmer of Corona, California; Christina and Cedric Messner of Phoenix, Arizona; 47 grandchildren and 81 great-grandchildren.
